First Question
Question 1: What is your only comfort in life and in death?
That I, with body and soul, both in life and in death, am not my own, but belong to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with His precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that without the will of my Father in heaven, not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, all things must work together for my salvation. Therefore, by His Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for Him.
Key Explanations
The Only Comfort (einiger Trost)
Emphasizes that in all life circumstances, especially when facing death, there is only one true support.
Not Belonging to Oneself (nicht mein, sondern ... eigen bin)
Indicates that the Christian's sovereignty belongs to Christ; we are His possession.
Faithful Savior Jesus Christ (meines getreuen Heilands Jesu Christi)
Points out that the source of comfort is Jesus Christ, who is a reliable and faithful Savior.
Fully Paid All My Sin Debt with His Precious Blood (mit seinem teuren Blut für alle meine Sünden vollkömmlich bezahlet)
Emphasizes that Christ's atonement is complete, sufficient to forgive all sins.
Rescued Me from All the Power of the Devil (mich aus aller Gewalt des Teufels erlöset hat)
Explains that Christ's redemption also includes liberation from sin and Satan's power.
Preserves Me in This Way (also bewahret)
God's continuous preservation and care for believers.
Without My Heavenly Father's Will, Not Even a Hair Can Fall from My Head (ohne den Willen meines Vaters im Himmel kein Haar von meinem Haupt kann fallen)
Emphasizes God's absolute sovereignty and detailed protection of believers.
All Things Must Work Together for My Benefit, Leading to Salvation (ja auch mir alles zu meiner Seligkeit dienen muß)
References Romans 8:28, indicating that God's sovereignty guides all things for the benefit of believers.
Through His Holy Spirit He Assures Me of Eternal Life (durch seinen Heiligen Geist des ewigen Lebens versichert)
The Holy Spirit works in believers' hearts to confirm their salvation.
Makes Me Heartily Willing and Ready to Live for Him from Now On (ihm forthin zu leben von Herzen willig und bereit macht)
Salvation brings life change, making believers willing to obey Christ.
The Second Question
Question 2: How many things do you need to know so that you may live and die happily in this comfort?
Three things:
First, how great my sin and misery are;
Second, how I am redeemed from all my sins and misery;
Third, how I am to be thankful to God for such redemption.
Key Explanations
What We Need to Know
What we need to know (wieviel Stücke sind dir nötig zu wissen): Emphasizes that there is necessary knowledge for living and dying in the comfort mentioned in the first question.
Three Things
Three Things (Drei Stücke): Summarizes the core knowledge of Christian faith into three parts.
Sin and Misery
How great my sin and misery are (wie groß meine Sünde und Elend sei): Recognizing human fallenness and the resulting suffering is the foundation for understanding redemption.
Path to Redemption
How I am redeemed from all my sins and misery (wie ich von allen meinen Sünden und Elend erlöst werde): Points to Christ's redemptive work, which is the only solution to sin and suffering.
Grateful Response
How I should be thankful to God for such redemption (wie ich Gott für solche Erlösung soll dankbar sein): Emphasizes the responsibility after redemption, which is to respond to God's grace with gratitude and to live a life worthy of salvation.
Foundation of the Catechism
These two questions and answers lay the foundation for the entire Heidelberg Catechism, guiding believers to recognize their sin, Christ's redemption, and the life of gratitude after receiving grace.
Recognizing Sin
Understanding one's sinful nature and fallen state
Christ's Redemption
Understanding the redemptive work of Jesus Christ
Life of Gratitude
Responding to God's grace with a thankful heart
Life Application
The Heidelberg Catechism is not only theological knowledge, but also a guide for daily life. It helps believers practice the faith journey of "confession," "trust," and "gratitude" in reality.
Spiritual Reflection
Spend 15 minutes daily in quiet prayer, examining your heart. Participate in weekly small group Bible studies to discuss how you experience the reality of sin and the joy of salvation.
Family Relationships
Practice forgiveness and reconciliation during family conflicts. Find opportunities every day to express gratitude to family members, demonstrating Christ's love concretely in daily interactions.
Grateful Service
Participate in church ministry, serving others with your gifts. Look for opportunities to help those in need in the community, such as visiting the elderly or volunteering at food banks.
Workplace Witness
Witness through integrity and excellence in your work attitude. Use lunch breaks to read the Bible or catechism, and apply faith principles in professional decision-making.
